Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet recently opened up to THR Roma about her deep commitment to Lee, a biopic about legendary war photographer Lee Miller. Winslet not only stars as the groundbreaking photojournalist but also played a pivotal role in bringing the story to life—a project that took over eight years to complete.
The Inspiration Behind Lee
The idea for Lee came to Winslet by chance when she purchased a table once owned by the sister of Roland Penrose, Lee Miller’s artist husband. Intrigued by Miller’s extraordinary life, Winslet became determined to turn her story into a film. With the help of Miller’s son, Antony Penrose, she began developing the project, which captures the photographer’s daring journey during World War II.
Winslet describes Miller as a trailblazer who contributed significantly to documenting the atrocities of the Nazi regime through her photographs. “Without Lee Miller, we wouldn’t have those extraordinary images that give voice to the voiceless victims of conflict,” Winslet shared.
Bringing Miller’s Story to the Screen
The production of Lee was a true labor of love. At one point, Winslet personally funded the cast and crew for two weeks to keep the project moving. She also called in favors from friends in the industry, securing a stellar cast that includes Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Marion Cotillard.
To ensure authenticity, the creative team, including cinematographer Pawel Edelman (The Pianist), production designer Gemma Jackson (Game of Thrones), and costume designer Michael O’Connor (Jane Eyre), meticulously recreated Miller’s world, down to the clothes she wore.
The film focuses on Miller’s time as a war correspondent for British Vogue during World War II, showcasing her transformation from a model and artist into a fearless journalist who captured powerful images of human suffering and resilience.
Winslet on Miller’s Legacy
Winslet sees Miller as a woman ahead of her time, redefining femininity through resilience, courage, and compassion. “She led with integrity and grace, and her courage to step in front of the camera to become an iconographic voice for war victims was remarkable,” Winslet said.
The actress believes Miller’s story remains relevant today, offering a powerful example of leadership and perseverance. “Lee never turned her back or ran away. She stayed, witnessing and documenting the truth. We need people like her to inspire us,” she added.
Winslet’s Approach to Acting
Reflecting on her long career, Winslet shared how her perspective has evolved over the years. “I enjoy my work more and more each day, and I’m incredibly grateful for it. My approach hasn’t changed: either give it your best or don’t do it at all,” she explained. Winslet, who has been in the industry for 32 years, credits her passion and dedication for her longevity.
Lee: A Celebration of Strength and Vision
As Lee earns critical acclaim and awards buzz, Winslet hopes the film will shine a light on Miller’s extraordinary life and contributions. “She was phenomenally courageous, and it was a privilege to tell her story,” Winslet concluded.
The film, directed by Ellen Kuras, not only honors Lee Miller’s legacy but also highlights the enduring importance of documenting truth, even in the darkest of times.
